Day Trip Itinerary from Athens to Nafplio

First Stop: Corinth Canal

Your first stop on the way from Athens to Nafplio is the impressive Corinth Canal, located about an hour’s drive from Athens. This engineering marvel is definitely worth a visit. The canal, which connects the Saronic Gulf with the Corinthian Gulf, has a fascinating history. Though the idea of creating a canal dates back to Emperor Nero in the 1st century AD, its actual excavation and official opening took place between 1881 and 1889.

The Corinth Canal significantly shortened the maritime journey from Athens (specifically from Piraeus) to the Adriatic Sea by 320 kilometers. It stretches 6.2 kilometers in length, with a width varying between 21 and 25 meters and a depth of 8 meters. To view the canal, you’ll need to exit the toll highway and head to the bridge. From there, you can watch tourist yachts and cruise ships navigating the canal.

Pro Tip: There are several bridges over the canal, and accessibility can vary. The bridge featured in the photos is located here (Google Maps is recommended for navigation as Waze might not have precise directions).

Second Stop: Archaeological Site of Nemea

Your next stop is the Archaeological Site of Nemea, a site rich in Greek mythology and history. According to legend, this is where Hercules defeated the Nemean Lion, and it was also the location of the ancient Nemean Games.

Today, the site features an archaeological museum and the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, which was constructed in the 6th century BCE. The entrance to the site is ticketed, but it’s relatively small and can be explored fairly quickly. It’s a great spot to visit on your way to Nafplio, even if it's just for some memorable photos of the ancient temple.

Nafplio: A Charming Seaside Town

Nafplio is a picturesque port town located in the northern part of the Argolis Gulf in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It served as the first capital of modern Greece from 1829 to 1834.

The Old Town of Nafplio is built on a peninsula that extends into the Argolis Gulf, creating a small harbor known as Nafplio Harbor. The town is renowned for its romantic ambiance, characterized by narrow alleys, charming houses, and quaint churches. It’s considered one of the most beautiful towns in Greece, largely due to the Italianate architecture that remains from the Venetian occupation in the 18th century.

The central square of Nafplio is called Syntagma Square, named after its Athens counterpart. This spacious square is surrounded by historic buildings, restaurants, and shops. It’s a great place to start your exploration of the town—take a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets and soak in the unique blend of history and charm that Nafplio has to offer.

Nafplio Promenade: A Perfect Spot for Sunset Views

The promenade of Nafplio has been beautifully renovated and serves as a central gathering point in the town. A walk along the promenade is enjoyable at any time of day, but it’s especially delightful during sunset.

As the sun begins to set, the promenade fills up with both locals and tourists eager to watch the stunning sunset. You’ll find that the area comes alive with people enjoying the view from one of the many bars and restaurants lining the waterfront.

For a truly memorable experience, I recommend securing a seat on the outdoor terrace of one of the bars. Grab a glass of wine and savor the breathtaking sunset while soaking in the lively atmosphere.

Palamidi Fortress: A Majestic Overlook of Nafplio

Perched 230 meters above Nafplio, Palamidi Fortress offers breathtaking panoramic views of the town and the Argolis Gulf. The fortress is named after Palamedes, the son of its builder, who is credited with inventing the Greek alphabet and several other significant innovations.

You can reach the fortress either by climbing approximately 900 steps or by driving up a road that leads directly to the main entrance. The ascent, whether on foot or by car, rewards visitors with one of the most stunning vistas in Greece.

The fortress itself is a large and complex site, so plan to spend at least two hours exploring its expansive grounds and soaking in the incredible views.
