Many people ask me when planning an exotic trip: which is "better"—the Maldives or Seychelles? Where is the more luxurious honeymoon? Where do you get more value for the price? And which has the more stunning water?
Despite what some may think, these are two very different destinations, and it’s worth understanding the key differences before booking a trip.
After enjoying both, here’s my comparison with tips for planning a trip to each location.
The Maldives
The Maldives, an island nation in Asia, consists of 26 atolls with 1,192 islands, though only 192 are inhabited. This is the smallest country in Asia in terms of population, as well as the smallest among Muslim countries. A trip here feels like the ultimate luxury vacation—you’ll feel as if you’re in paradise with turquoise waters and white sand as far as the eye can see.
Seychelles
The Seychelles archipelago, close to Africa, includes 115 islands, with only 33 inhabited. The most popular islands are Mahé, where the capital city Victoria is located, as well as Praslin and La Digue. These islands are larger and more populated than those in the Maldives, and part of the experience can be an authentic interaction with locals and their lifestyle. The landscapes here are breathtaking, featuring turquoise seas along with lush, green mountains and jungles thanks to natural reserves.
Best Time to Visit
Maldives
The Maldives enjoys tropical warmth year-round, but the climate divides into two main seasons: the dry season (northeast monsoon) from November to April and the wet season (southwest monsoon) from May to October. The dry season offers idyllic weather—calm seas, clear skies, and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for water activities like snorkeling and diving. Between December and March, visitor numbers peak, so it's essential to book early to secure accommodations. The wet season brings more rain and humidity, but it also attracts fewer tourists, meaning lower prices and a quieter atmosphere. Despite the rain, the showers are often brief, allowing plenty of sunny spells.
Seychelles
Seychelles also has a warm tropical climate, but the best time to visit is influenced by trade winds that create two primary seasons: the northwest monsoon from November to March and the southeast trade winds from May to September. The months of April, October, and November are transitional periods with calm waters and minimal wind, making them ideal for swimming, diving, and snorkeling. December to March is the wettest period, though the rainfall typically comes in short bursts. From May to September, the southeast trade winds bring drier weather but can cause rougher seas, especially along the southeastern coasts, making some beach activities challenging. Nonetheless, this season offers a pleasant climate for hiking and exploring the islands' interior.
Type of Vacation
Maldives
A vacation in the Maldives is usually a relaxed beach holiday rather than an active tour. Most resorts are located on their own private islands, so the resort itself becomes your entire experience. You won’t encounter local life, as the island is dedicated solely to resort guests and staff. You’ll feel as though you’re on a secluded island—just you, the turquoise waters, and attentive resort staff dedicated to giving you a perfect paradise experience.
Seychelles
A trip to Seychelles can be tailored to suit your needs. You could choose to stay on one island or explore multiple islands for a more varied experience. The islands are relatively large compared to those in the Maldives, and you’ll find a variety of resorts and hotels at different price levels. You can explore the islands themselves or take day cruises to nearby islands. There are also nature reserves, hiking trails, and various attractions.
Cost
Maldives
The primary expense here is the hotel, though other costs can add up. If you don’t book an “all-inclusive” package (if available at your chosen hotel), expect high additional expenses since there are no alternatives on the island besides the hotel’s facilities. Most internal flights from the airport in Malé to other islands are seaplane flights, which can be costly due to a single operating company. This is an added cost you’ll need to budget for.
Tip to reduce costs - Look for a hotel near Malé, as some resorts can be accessed by boat, eliminating the need for an internal flight. Also, an “all-inclusive” package can help you control costs more effectively.
Seychelles
The cost of a vacation in Seychelles can vary widely based on your chosen itinerary. There are hotels of different standards on the three main islands, and if you stay on a single island, you can save on internal flights and transfers.
Seychelles is a populated area with shops, restaurants, and tour agencies, so you aren’t required to book everything through your hotel (though that’s an option for those seeking full relaxation). Generally, a trip to Seychelles is more affordable than a trip to the Maldives, but it can still be just as luxurious.
