The Red Canyon
The Red Canyon is located about 20 km north of Eilat, right next to the Egyptian border. It earned its name due to its unique color, which comes from the iron compounds in the canyon's soil and rocks. The canyon stretches approximately 200 meters in length. There are two possible hiking trails in the area: the longer one takes about three hours, while the shorter one takes just under an hour. Both routes pass through the canyon. Please note that the trails involve climbing ladders and holding onto metal rungs, so they may not be suitable for everyone.
Getting There:
Enter "Red Canyon" in Waze, arrive at the parking lot located right at the start of the marked trail, and begin walking. The path is very clear, including the point where you turn back if you're taking the shorter route.
Important Note:
The Red Canyon is located on Route 12, unlike Timna Park and the Hidden Lake, which are on Route 90. Therefore, it would be difficult to visit both areas on the same day.
Timna Park
Timna Park is located a twenty-minute drive north of Eilat, along Route 90. It is home to one of the world's oldest copper mines, with evidence of copper mining dating back to the 10th century BCE. Today, Timna Park is a designated nature reserve, and entry requires a fee. Tickets can be purchased in advance on the park's website, and there is a discount available for members of the "Be'Hatzdaa" club. All points of interest within the park are connected by a road, allowing visitors to drive from one spot to another. This is the recommended way to explore the park due to its large size and expansive area. Visitors receive a map and information at the entrance to help guide their journey.
During more temperate seasons, there is also the option for hiking. Points of interest in Timna Park include:
The Mushroom - A giant rock formation shaped like a mushroom.
The Arch - A Natural Rock Arch with Stunning Sunrise Views
One of the most captivating attractions in Timna Park is "The Arch." This natural rock formation offers a breathtaking view, especially at sunrise. As the sun rises, the arch frames the landscape, creating a picturesque scene that is perfect for photography and simply appreciating the beauty of nature. Visitors can hike to the arch, enjoying the serene desert environment along the way. Whether you're an avid photographer or just looking for a peaceful spot to watch the sunrise, The Arch is a must-see in Timna Park.
Solomon's Pillars - Majestic Rock Columns
Another highlight of Timna Park is Solomon's Pillars, towering rock columns that reach a height of 40 meters. At the base of these impressive formations, there was an ancient Egyptian temple established by the Egyptian copper miners who once inhabited the area. The pillars and the remnants of the temple offer a fascinating glimpse into the region's rich historical and cultural past, making it a significant spot for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
Timna Lake - A Man-Made Lake for Wildlife and Visitors
Timna Lake is a beautiful man-made lake created to benefit both the local wildlife and the visitors to the area. This serene spot provides a refreshing contrast to the desert surroundings, making it an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature.
The tour of the park, including stops at various points of interest, takes about two and a half to three hours by car. The drive allows you to comfortably explore the extensive park and fully appreciate its unique landscapes and attractions. Whether you're looking to unwind by the lake or discover the natural beauty and historical significance of Timna Park, this route offers a comprehensive and enjoyable experience.
The Hidden Lake
The Hidden Lake is essentially a reservoir created in the area of the copper mines near Timna ("Timna Mines Eilat"), about a ten-minute drive south of Timna Park towards the city of Eilat. The waters of the lake shine with a stunning turquoise hue due to copper deposits, which also make it unsuitable for swimming.
To reach it, enter "The Hidden Lake" in Waze, drive to the barrier, park your car, and continue on foot for about five minutes along the lower dirt road. There isn't much to do around the lake besides marveling at its beauty.
Snack Stops Along the Way
Moa Winery - Moa Winery is located in Kibbutz Zofar in the Arava Desert, on the way to Eilat, along Route 90. The winery was established as a family-owned venture, sourcing grapes for wine production from vineyards in the windy plains near Mitzpe Ramon. The winery boasts a pastoral desert atmosphere that is both charming and slightly mysterious. It's as if you suddenly find yourself in an oasis of desert tranquility, surrounded by exquisite wines.
At Moa Winery, you can taste a variety of wines with the option to choose from 4 different wines for tasting or purchase a glass/bottle. Pair your wine with delicious cheeses from the stunning Bari Dairy Farm and excellent bread.
The Deli on Route 90
"The Deli on Route 90" (as it's also listed on Waze) is located at the entrance to the settlement of Tzukim in the Arava Desert. This deli offers a variety of sandwiches filled with cheeses and meats, alongside chilled beer brewed locally. The sandwiches are rich in flavors, fresh, and delicious! At the deli, you can also purchase homemade cheeses to take with you. It's a perfect stop to grab a bite and enjoy the local flavors while traveling along Route 90.
